Tsuyuhikari: High-quality high-yield cultivar, resistant to anthracnose

Cultivar characteristics

“Tsutsuhikari” was selected at the Shizuoka Prefectural Tea Research Institute in 1972, a crossbreed with a mother of “Shizu7132” and a father of “Asatsuyu”. It is a new cultivar for which variety registration based on the Seed and Seedling Law was applied for in 2000 after a nutrition system comparison test and a recommended variety determination test as strain name "70-30-302". It became a recommended cultivar in Shizuoka Prefecture from April 2001.

“Tsuyuhikari” is an early-maturity cultivar whose germination period and harvesting period are about two days earlier than “Yabukita”. The tree is medium in shape, the horizontal planting is large and the vigor is extremely strong, and the shoots and bud heavy and high yielding. The adult leaves are green, long oval, with fewer waves at the edges, the new leaves are bright pale green and the leaf shape is in between the elliptical and elliptical shapes.

The cold-resistance and red wilt resistance is stronger than “Yabukita”, and the disease resistance is extremely strong against anthracnose and slightly strong against rice blast, but red blight must be controlled because it may occur.

Quality characteristics

The quality of the first flush of “Tsuyuhikari” tea, the color and luster are light green, and the color of the infusion is bright and pleasant. If deeply steamed, it will be a beautiful green shade. The flavor has a characteristic refreshing aroma and mild flavor.

Notes on cultivation

“Tsuyuhikari” is a relatively easy to grow and manage cultivar, because of its excellent disease resistance and cold resistance. As the vigor is strong and tends to grow heavy buds, it is necessary to tailor, trim, and twig to increase the number of buds.

Notes on processing

It is necessary to consider the production method in detail in the future, but it is desirable to produce a product that enhances its refreshing aroma and the bright infusion color of “Tsuyuhikari”. It is necessary to pay attention to the degree of steaming and tea temperature during the process.

Dissemination and land suitability for cultivation

Because of its excellent disease and cold resistance, it has wide regional adaptability and is suitable for cultivation in all areas of Shizuoka Prefecture. Since it is extremely resistant to anthracnose, it is possible to reduce the use of pesticides and it is a cultivar suitable for environmentally friendly cultivation. Being a slightly early-maturity cultivar, it is suitable for cultivation in combination with “Yabukita”.
