Lanka
Sri Lanka is home to world-famous Ceylon tea. In a country
where many people enjoy tea throughout the day - after waking, at midmorning,
in the afternoon, after dinner and so on - preparing tea for the family is mostly
done by the housewife. A family of four usually consumes 1 to 1.5 kilograms of
black tea per month. In both urban and rural areas of Sri Lanka, there are many
tea kiosks and tea cafes where people can be seen enjoying tea, sometimes with
a snack. In Sri Lanka the word "pekoe," well-known around the world from orange
pekoe tea, denotes a particular grade tea leaf. And did you know that here there
are tea leaves known as "golden tips" and "silver tips"? These teas fetch high
prices and cannot be found at the regular tea auctions. They are known as the
acme grades of Ceylon tea. |
